GPS Navigation
Just in time for summer vacation 2000, Rand
McNally - the folks who have brought you atlases, maps and
other travel goodies for about the last century and a half
- is preparing to release a nifty pair of devices for all
of you Palm III and Palm V aficionados. Termed the StreetFinder
GPS for Palm III and Palm V organizers, the packages comprise
stylish, lightweight GPS receivers which clip on to the back
of the Palm PDA's and allow for determining your precise location
using the Global Positioning System satellite constellation.
Combined
with the GPS receiver is Rand McNally's much-heralded StreetFinder
Deluxe 2000 CD-ROM mapping software, which gives you the ability
to download maps, directions, points of interest and business
services from your PC to your Palm PDA.
So, as you proceed on your trip, the StreetFinder presents
you with a merged display of your route of travel and noted
locations of interest, while allowing you to access desired
addresses. Other key features include a zoom function for
enhanced, street-level detail and "quick zoom", to bring all
marked locations into one screen view.
Accessories included with both packages include:
- cloth carrying case,
- cigarette lighter power adapter, and
- a flexible windshield mount.
The Palm III kit includes high-capacity, rechargeable lithium
ion batteries and an accompanying AC battery re-charger. The
Palm V package has two AAA batteries.
Additional information that can be gleaned
from the StreetFinder Deluxe 2000 CD-ROM for trip planning
includes:
(1) Trip Organizer, which offers access to address-to-address
directions and hotel/airline reservations via the Internet,
travel expenses logging, and appointment schedule tracking;
(2) Concierge, which recommends hotels, restaurants and nightlife
activities;
(3) Mobil Travel Guide information and ratings;
(4) Access to a database of over one million business service
listings.
